Well I'm glad I didn't miss anything with Ellen and Linda. That's the way those shows go sometimes when there's a bunch of girls on there it like a fox in the hen house. Total madness or "fluff". You've seen The View right? ;D Kidding

I think it's likely that Roberta Mazwell will receive an Oscar nomination and woudln't be surprised if she wins, even though her performance comprises only one scene and just a few minutes of screentime.  Beatrice Straight won Best Supporting Actress in 1976 for her four-minute scene -- a monologue, really -- in "Network" when her character, Louise,  lashes out at her husband, played by Bill Holden, after he tells her he's having an affair.  It's a heartwrenching scene to watch and she richly deserved her win.  (Don't remeber who else was nominated.)   Roberta Maxwell's portrayal of Jack's mother is similarly gut-wrenching and the pathos she brings to the film in just those few minutes -- and with so little dialogue -- is equally deserving of a nomination and an Oscar.

Carissa - thanks so much for posting this - it answered the question that has been driving me nuts ever since the Golden Globes: (pronounced San-tuh-oh-Lah'-yah).

They pronounced it San-tuh-oh-Lah'-lah on the globes (and it threw me, as I though it should be pronounced the way the article you posted said).
Unlimited tolerance must lead to the disappearance of tolerance. If we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant, if we are not prepared to defend a tolerant society against the onslaught of the intolerant, then the tolerant will be destroyed, and tolerance with them. - Karl R. I thought the daughters were good.

The elder daughter, in the fnal scene with her and Enni, it seemed to show the bond she had with her father - he was difficult, taciturn, 'not the marrying kind' and no doubt had let her down many a time but she still loved and accepted him as he was.

Throughout it all he was a loving and loved father.

OMG!

Sorry for looking like a complete fool, but I just figured out who Anna Faris was. I knew the name but it never clicked that it was the same girl from the "scary movie" franchise. I read her filmography and saw "Brokeback Mountain"... My first reaction was that they made a mistake or she was in a deleted scene. Then i read she played LaShawn and I was shocked!... I cant believe I didn't recognize her!. I would have never realized it was her had I not stumbled upon it. I very impressed with her right now. Given her usual roles, I never thought she would be in a film like this... or any other film exept parodies/comedies. Hopefully this will broaden her roles for future films. She was incredible in the little part she was given so i hope the best to her. Sorry for being slow with my realization...

...Im still in shock lol... This film is giving me more surprises than i was expecting..

 :)

Don't be embarrassed. I had the same late realization (although not as late as you...  ;D).  I knew going into the movie that Anna Faris was in it.  And, I know who she is.  But, the first time I saw the movie, I was so engrossed by it that I didn't recognize her at all.  It only hit me when I read through the credits and saw her name again. I even had to do a second take to review in my head who LaShawn was.  In the second viewing, I paid extra attention to her and she was truly unrecognizable.  I'm really very impressed with the entire ensemble of this film.

There was some open space between what he knew and what he tried to believe, but nothing could be done about it, and if you can't fix it you've got to stand it.

On the front page of imdb, they have Kate Mara in their "spotlight".  Here's a screencap:

It would have been great if O had asked Heath about Roberta Maxwell and their scene together instead of the kiss...giving Roberta a little "shoutout" to get her name out in public more.

I was really struck by the inspired casting of the children, especially Jack's son who turns out to be the spitting image of L.D., his obnoxious grandpa, in the scene at the dinner table at Thanksgiving and immediately evokes L.D.'s callous remark right after the birth. Poor Jack had to have the resemblance growing under his nose, the whole time, and yet what a good and decent father he was, making a nuisance of himself with the teachers and putting his foot down so forcefully when L.D. undermines his authority. The pairs of actresses chosen to play Enis' daughters at different times were also great choices, seeming to blend Alma's skin and hair colour with Ennis's eyes (especially Alma jr.)

If anyone's interested in Mary McBride from the soundtrack, she's playing a free show at Hank's Saloon in Brooklyn on Thursday, Feb 2nd.  Should be a great night, Heath lives around the corner too so here's hoping we can get em to stop by!  www.HanksSaloon.com.  sweeeeet.

I recognized Anna about 10 seconds into her first appearance but then sort of consciously ignored all the comedies she's been in. She was good in the role but I wish they would have picked someone else. Seeing the movie for a second time all I could think when seeing her was all those stupids faces she did in SCARY MOVIE.  :-\

From Boreum Hill in Brooklyn.

If anyone is interested,  Mary McBride , fresh off the soundtrack to Brokeback mountain as well as also appearing in the film, is playing a free show at Hank's Saloon this Thursday Feb 2.  I'm not exactly sure what time her set starts, but I do know that there is another wonderful female singer on before her.  All in all it'll be a great night.  If ya don't know where Hank's is, look for the flames on the corner of Atlantic and Third ave.  Hopefully we'll see some of the neighborhood there!

i loved the woman who played Jack's mom. anyone know what she has been in before? i don't know that i've seen her. or noticed.

I haven't had a chance to verify this.......but didn't she play Sean Penn's character's Mom in Dead Man Walking?   Her performance in that was  wonderful as well.

chris
